Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
What is IUI?
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), also known as artificial insemination, is a simple fertility procedure aimed at enhancing the chances of pregnancy by directly introducing sperm into a woman’s uterus. This procedure is beneficial for couples dealing with infertility due to factors like sperm issues or unexplained causes. IUI improves the likelihood of successful fertilization, by increasing the concentration of sperm reaching the fallopian tubes.
The success rates of IUI typically range from 12% to 18% per cycle, and these rates can vary based on factors such as age, the underlying cause of infertility and the utilization of fertility drugs to stimulate the process.
Who can opt for IUI?
The IUI procedure is the right choice for you if:
- You’ve undergone 3-4 cycles of OI/TI (Ovulation Induction/Timed Intercourse) without success
- There’s a mild male factor involved
- The cause of infertility is unexplained
- There’s a diagnosis of mild endometriosis
- There are challenges that arise due to erectile dysfunction
- There is a presence of sexual dysfunction conditions like Vaginismus
- You’re a couple separated by distance and need frozen sperm IUI
- You want to minimize transmission risk in cases where one partner is HIV/HbsAg positive
What are the prerequisites for IUI?
Before considering IUI, there are certain criteria to meet. Firstly, ensure the post-wash sperm count is within the specified range of 5-10 million. This count is vital for the procedure’s success. Secondly, at least one fallopian tube must be open. An open and functional tube is critical for the sperm to reach the egg.
AID (Artificial Insemination with Donor Sperm)
Couples who are diagnosed with Azoospermia (absence of sperms) and do not want to undergo TESA-ICSI can go for Donor Sperm IUI. This procedure is similar to standard IUI, but a donor sample is used after obtaining the couple’s consent.
