Donor Sperm
What is Donor Sperm?
Donor sperm involves the use of sperm from a sperm donor to facilitate conception. This method is commonly chosen by individuals or couples who are experiencing severe male infertility issues and looking to start a family. Donor sperm allows for the fertilization of an egg, either from the intended mother or a donor, to create an embryo that can be implanted in the uterus.
Who can opt for Donor Sperm?
Male factor infertility
Couples facing male infertility issues, such as
- No sperm in semen (Azoospermia) with failed TESA – ICSI
- Failed Micro TESE in Azoospermia
- Severe low sperm count or poor sperm motility with failed multiple ICSI cycles
- Couples with Azoospermia/severe OATS, who do not want to go for IVF/ICSI
- Couples who have a high risk of genetically transmitting disease to their offspring and do not want IVF/PGT
Single Women
Single women who wish to become mothers without a male partner can opt for donor sperm to achieve pregnancy.
The process of donor sperm selection
1
Donor selection
Similar to the donor oocyte, intended parents can select a sperm donor based on specific criteria. The sperm donor is recruited by a registered ART bank, and all procedures are done according to the ART Act 2021 as mandated by Indian law
2
Insemination
The donor sperm is used to inseminate the egg, either through Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) or In vitro Fertilization (IVF) procedures
3
Embryo development
If using IVF, the fertilized egg develops into an embryo in the laboratory
4
Embryo transfer
The embryo is transferred to the uterus of the intended mother. The child born by a donor sperm cycle is legally the child of the infertile couple with all the legal rights
