Micro TESE (Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction)

infertility treatment in india

What is Micro TESE?

Micro TESE is an advanced micro-surgical procedure in which a specialized surgeon uses an operating microscope to identify and extract tubules from the testes that are more likely to contain sperm. It’s particularly useful when sperm is absent in the ejaculate.

Who can opt for Micro TESE?

Micro TESE is especially beneficial for:

  • Men with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) where the testes don’t produce sufficient sperm
  • Those who’ve had unsuccessful conventional TESA or PESA procedures
  • Men who wish to maximize the chance of finding sperm with the least amount of tissue removal

What are the prerequisites for Micro TESE?

  • A detailed male fertility evaluation
  • Hormonal assessments are used to gauge testicular function
  • Genetic tests wherever indicated
  • A consultation to discuss the procedure, its benefits, and potential risks
  • Screening for any infection or medical contraindication

How does Micro TESE work?

Under anesthesia, an incision is made in the scrotum. Using a microscope, the surgeon identifies tubules in the testes that are more likely to contain sperm and extracts tissue from these areas. Since minimal tissue is extracted, sperm can be removed from multiple sites, thus increasing the chance of finding sperm and minimizing the amount of tissue removed at the same time. The sperm can be used for ICSI and cryopreserved (stored) for further use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Micro TESE always successful in finding sperm?

While Micro TESE has a higher success rate than other methods in men with non-obstructive azoospermia, there’s no absolute guarantee.

Are there any long-term effects on testosterone levels or other side effects?

Micro TESE is designed to preserve testicular function and should have minimal impact on testosterone levels. Regular check-ups post-procedure are recommended.
