DFI (DNA Fragmentation Index)

DFI

What is DFI?

The DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI) is a diagnostic test that measures the percentage of sperm cells with fragmented DNA. High levels of DNA fragmentation in sperm may negatively impact male fertility and may lead to decreased pregnancy rates and increased miscarriage rates, irrespective of conventional semen parameters like sperm count, motility and morphology.

Who can opt for DFI?

DFI testing is recommended for:

  • Men with unexplained infertility
  • Men with prolonged time to pregnancy despite having normal conventional semen parameters like sperm count, motility and morphology
  • Couples who have poor embryo formation
  • Those with unsuccessful IVF or ICSI cycles
  • Couples with recurrent miscarriages
  • Male partner with obesity, diabetes or exposure to chemotherapy

What are the prerequisites for DFI?

Before undergoing DFI:

  • Standard semen analysis to assess overall sperm health is preferable
  • Abstain from ejaculation for 1-2 days to ensure standardization of the result
