Impact of Assisted Hatching on Infertility Treatment

Assisted hatching is a new laboratory technique that is used in case of failed IVF treatment or when they have a poor prognosis for IVF. Assisted hatching is performed to help an embryo implant in the woman’s womb. To successfully hatch the embryo must rupture through its outer layer called zona pullucida.

Before getting attached to the wall of the womb, the embryo has to break out and hatch from its outer layer. It is generally recommended that making a hole or thinning the outer layer helps the embryo to hatch resulting in increasing the chances of pregnancy. Assisted hatching is one of the best procedures used to hatch an embryo through different techniques. However the assisted hatching does not improve the quality of the embryos.

Assisted hatching is a rare procedure used during in vitro fertilization (IVF). In assisted hatching, an embryologist uses micromanipulation technique under a microscope to create a small hole in zona pellucida. Micromanipulation technique can be used on the fourth day of embryo development. On fourth day of embryo development the embryos will contain an average of 6-8 cells.

The outer layer, zona pellucida is ruptured and dissolved with the help of an acidic mixture. An alternative method to dissolve the outer layer is laser treatment that helps in assisted hatching.

Assisted Hatching and In vitro Fertilization

Assisted hatching technique was first discovered in the year 1990 to assist the implantation process during in vitro fertilization (IVF). Assisted hatching is a step wise procedure that helps in thinning and dissolving the zona pellucida.

In vitro fertilization hatching is done using 3 different methods:

  1. Hatching with acid Tyrode’s solution
  2. Partial zone dissection
  3. Assisted embryo hatching with laser

Assisted hatching is performed in 3 basic steps:

  1. On the third day of embryo development, the embryologist makes use of weak acids in a glass pipette to dissolve the outer layer. In few cases the micro laser or a micro tool can also be used to thin or make a hole in the outer layer of the embryos.
  2. If the embryologist uses weak acids, the embryos are washed to prevent further damage to the embryo.
  3. Your gynaecologist may ask you to take antibiotics to avoid infection caused due to the rupture in the outer layer around the embryo.

Assisted hatching is considered as safe procedure and does not cause any abnormality in the baby. In few cases when multiple embryos are transferred, it may increase the risks of multiple births.

According to recent studies, assisted hatching can improve the IVF success as compared to the IVF cases without assisted hatching. Assisted hatching success rate can be determined by the increase in pregnancy rate through IVF treatment.

Infertility specialists in Hitech city can be consulted for assisted hatching process. Hegde fertility center also has infertility specialist in Kondapur who can perform assisted hatching in IVF treatment to increase the chances of pregnancy. Infertility treatment cost  is reasonable at Hegde fertility center.
