What Do You Know About Endometriosis

Endometrium is the inner lining of the uterus whereas; endometriosis is a painful disorder in which the inner lining endomterium grows outside the uterus. Endometriosis is also considered as an abnormal growth of endometrial cells outside the uterus. Endomteriosis is commonly found on other organs of pelvis.

Endometriosis may also occur when the endometrium grows on your ovaries, bowel and tissues lining your pelvis. There are less chances of endometrial tissue to spread beyond the pelvic region, but it’s not impossible. The endometrial tissues growing outside the uterus is considered as an endometrial implant.

The hormonal changes during the menstrual period will have a negative impact on your endometrial tissues. These tissues will grow gets thicken and break down. The tissues that are broken down will get trapped in your pelvis and can cause the following conditions:

  • Severe pain
  • Scar formation
  • Irritation
  • Adhesions
  • Fertility problems

Endometriosis Symptoms

The symptoms of endometriosis vary in each individual. The symptoms vary from mild to moderate and severe. The common symptoms associated with endometriosis include:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Painful menstrual periods
  • Lower abdominal pain before and during menstruation
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Infertility
  • Painful sexual intercourse
  • Lower back pain

In few cases, symptoms are not visible till the gynecological examination is done. Gynecological examination will allow your gynecologist to monitor any change taking place in the body especially reproductive organs.

Endometriosis Causes

The root cause of endometriosis is still unknown. During your regular menstrual cycle, your body will shed lining or endometrium of your uterus. Shedding of inner lining allows your menstrual blood to flow from your uterus through the small opening in the cervix and then through vagina.

Endometriosis usually occurs due to a process called retrograde menstruation. This condition occurs when the menstrual blood flows back through the fallopian tubes into your pelvic cavity instead of getting released out of your body.

The displaced endometrial cells gets stick to your pelvic walls and the surface of your pelvic organs like your bladder, ovaries and rectum. This lining continues to grow outside the uterus and gets thicken and bleed over the course of your menstrual cycle. There is a possibility that the menstrual blood may leak into the pelvic cavity through a surgical scar after delivery.

In few cases, doctors believe that some parts of your abdomen may convert and form an endometrial tissue. This condition arises because the abdominal cells grow from the embryonic cells and are more likely to change shape and act like endometrial cells.
